Weddings & Bridal FAQs
TRIALS & CONSULTATIONS
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT TRIALS & CONSULTS ARE IMPORTANT?
We just want to meet you! On the day, we're going to be a big part of your morning, so we want to have the opportunity to meet with you and discuss how you'd like the morning to run, and get a feel of your personality and the personality of your wedding. Every wedding is different because every bride is different, and meeting our brides in person is the best way for us to connect with our brides and ensure that the morning of your wedding day runs exactly how you'd like it to.
Trials & consults are also the perfect opportunity for us to decode your bridal beauty style, so that together we can create a look that makes you feel comfortable, confident and gorgeous!
WHAT DO YOU ASK AT TRIALS & CONSULTS?
Firstly, we confirm the date of your wedding, location, number of people, and the time that you need to be ready by. The time that you need to be ready by is not the time that you need to be getting into the limo- it's actually roughly an hour prior. This gives you time to have a moment to sit down with a glass of bubbles in hand, and gives your photographer time to snap those pre-wedding shots.
Next we chat about the hair & make-up styles that you love, and see your extensive Pinterest board. If you need some ideas on your hair & make-up styles, you can check out our own Pinterest board here. We'll ask you what venue you've chosen, whether you'll be wearing a veil or hair accessories, and what your dress looks like- all of these factors affect your bridal beauty style.
Next we'll chat about your bridal party, ask to see their dresses and accessories, and what vision you have for their hair & make-up.
We'll also ask you if there's any skin conditions, allergies or anything similar that we should know about in advance, so that we can ensure that we're prepared on the day.
FINANCIALS & CONTACT
HOW DO I BOOK?
We don't take online bookings for weddings, as every wedding is different. We require that you contact us either via email, Facebook message, or using the contact form here. We'll then send you a custom quote, plus a copy of our Bridal Info Pack. We're very transparent with our pricing, and it can be viewed here, however the custom quote includes travel and parking fees, if applicable.
We require a 1/3 non-refundable booking fee to book weddings, and recommend that you meet with us for a complimentary bridal consultation prior to paying this booking fee. These consults are just a casual 30 minute chat over coffee, and gives us the opportunity to meet in person. You can book a consultation in our studio in Karrinyup here. We will block off your date temporarily in our calendars until we've received the booking fee, however we cannot hold dates for more than 14 days.
The booking fee is to be paid via bank transfer. We also do take EFTPOS payments in person at our studio for the booking fee, but you must make an appointment to do so.
WHEN IS THE REMAINING BALANCE DUE?
We offer four different payment options for the remaining balance, which is due 7 (seven) business days prior to your wedding. For example, if your wedding is on the Saturday, then your payment is due on the Thursday the week before your wedding week.
FORTNIGHTLY INSTALMENTS VIA PAYPAL: These are customised instalments leading up to your wedding, with the amount dependent upon the cost of your wedding.
PAY IN FULL VIA PAYPAL
PAY IN FULL VIA BANK TRANSFER
PAY IN FULL VIA CREDIT CARD
We do not accept payments of cash, credit card, bank cheque, PayPal payments, or bank transfer on the day of your wedding, simply as you have enough to worry about on the day!
HOW FREQUENTLY ARE WE IN CONTACT PRIOR TO THE DAY?
We love to chat to our brides, but during the busy periods of the year (March to May, and September to December), we don't always have the luxury of being able to check our phones and sit at our desks, as we're too busy painting faces and washing our brushes to even drink our coffee whilst it's hot!
We prefer to have our Glam Squad answer our messages, emails and texts, rather than a receptionist or assistant, (or those awful Facebook bots!) as we do get some hairy questions thrown at us that only a professional can answer correctly! This means that during our busy periods we sometimes do have a delay of up to 48 hours before we can answer your email, but that's because we want to send you a proper response, not just a quick yes or no typed as we're running to a wedding!
We contact all of our brides at the following intervals:
When they first make their enquiry, we'll send them a response with a form to fill out, so that we can send them an accurate quote and a copy of our Bridal Info Pack.
We then contact them to arrange an appointment for a trial or consultation.
After the trial or consultation, we'll send you through the photos that we'll take of your trial.
Roughly a month prior to your wedding, we'll confirm the start time on the morning of your wedding. We'll also send you the invoice for the remaining balance, should you be paying in full via PayPal, Bank Transfer or Credit Card.
One to two weeks prior to your wedding, we'll confirm the start time again, the location of prep in the morning, and the number of people we'll be glamming up.
On the morning of your wedding, we'll send you a text with our expected arrival time when we're in the car, just so that you know that we're on our way!
ON THE BIG DAY
HOW DO WE WORK?
Every wedding is different, so every wedding timeline is different, and we're adaptable to any situation. We don't work with a set timeline, however we do have a rough order that we like to work in so that we have everyone glammed up right on time.
ROUGH WEDDING DAY TIMELINE:
1. HAIR FIRST FOR EVERYONE
We always work hair first, because the last thing you want at 6am in the morning before you've even had a coffee is your make-up done! We like to work hair first so that your bridal squad can have a coffee and wake up whilst we're working on you. We also work hair first because the hot tools close to your face can cause you to prematurely sweat, and we don't want that to happen! We leave your hair in pin curls if it's going to be worn down, and re-do any loose face framing sections, because we always mess those up when doing your make-up.
2. MOTB/MOTG MAKE-UP NEXT
We then work on doing your Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom's make-up, plus any other peoples' who aren't your bridesmaids.
3. HALF OF THE BRIDESMAIDS' MAKE-UP NEXT
Next we work on your bridesmaids' make-up, but only half of them- because next we're working on the bride.
4. BRIDE'S MAKE-UP AND TOUCH-UP HAIR
We then like to work on the bride and get you done and dusted, so that you can have plenty of time to get into that dress!
5. OTHER HALF OF THE BRIDESMAIDS' MAKE-UP
Next we do the other half of the bridesmaids' make-up, and touch up their hair also.
6. TOUCH UP BRIDAL PARTY AND MOTB/MOTG
Lastly we touch up the bridal party's make-up, pop on their lipstick and make sure everyone's hair is perfect and well hairsprayed.
EVERYWHERE I'VE READ SUGGESTS THAT YOU SHOULD DO THE BRIDE'S MAKE-UP LAST. WHY DON'T YOU DO THAT?
We've seen that recommendation everywhere too, and we used to do that when we first started out too- but we switched pretty quickly when we realised that it's a terrible idea. Wedding days get stressful, and things don't always go to plan, so we like to minimise the risk by getting the bride's make-up done in the middle. Why? In a pinch, our Glam Squad can do a bridesmaid's full face of make-up in roughly 20 mins, and it will be perfect for their photos and will last all night long. Bridesmaids don't get photos taken as close up as brides do, so the make-up for bridesmaids is generally still ultra-glam, but a little less elaborate. We also get to do the same look numerous times on all the bridesmaids that day, and the more times in a day that we do the same look, the quicker we are.
Brides, however, get super super super close up photos taken, so we need the extra time to check things over and be a perfectionist, because those fancy cameras that your photographer will be carrying around highlight every flaw, and catch even the slightest bump in your eyeliner that you need a magnifying glass to see. We also like to give your photographer plenty of time to take those getting ready shots of you and your girls, and we know that you'd prefer those taken with a full face of make-up, rather than just foundation and eyebrows!
SO BEFORE YOU ARRIVE, WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO GET READY?
We know that sometimes we're arriving well before the time that you'd usually get up, especially if you have a morning wedding, but we'd really appreciate if you could all be showered, with dry hair, clean faces, and freshly brushed teeth.
We're always on a time limit, so having people not ready for us to work on does make us late, and we may run out of time if we have to wait for 6 people to get dressed, brush their teeth, eat breakfast, and dry their hair. We do start hair first to encourage all of you to drink your morning coffee whilst we're working on you, but eating breakfast can be a little tricky when you can't move your head!
If we run out of time, we can't have our work done to our high standard, and that makes us unhappy (we're all total perfectionists at By Emily Grace). We always do allow extra time just in case, but please keep in mind, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, that we do have appointments booked directly after we leave your wedding, and if we run well over schedule, we won't have time to eat our own lunch!
Blowdrying hair and cleansing faces is not included in the cost of your hair and/or make-up booking, and we do not work on wet hair or faces that still have last night's make-up on.
We do send the bride a text in the morning when we're on our way over, so use that as your reminder to jump into that shower!
WHAT SHOULD MY BRIDAL PARTY DO AFTER GETTING THEIR HAIR & MAKE-UP DONE?
Sit! Weddings are extremely tiring, and the stress of a wedding is enough to make anyone exhausted. After you and your bridal party have had your hair and make-up done, we recommend that you'll sit, relax, pop open a bottle of bubbly, and enjoy the morning- it's a lot of fun getting pampered with your girl squad.
We also recommend that you stay indoors in air-conditioning, and away from wind and rain. Please don't run, do any rapid head movements (so no impromptu dance parties), or go for long drives, as these can all damage your hair, and we don't have time on wedding days to re-do anyone's hair or make-up.
DO I HAVE TO FEED YOU?
No you don't have to feed us, so don't worry about adding us into your catering head count- we provide our own food and take food and coffee breaks when we get a chance. We wouldn't say no to a cup of tea or coffee, though!
I'VE HEARD THAT YOU HAVE TO WEAR A LOT OF MAKE-UP IN ORDER TO LOOK GOOD ON CAMERA. IS THIS TRUE?
No, that's completely false- in most cases, less make-up actually looks better. Caked on make-up might look better if you're using subpar products, tools and techniques, but we've found that less is actually more. By this, we mean a lighter texture foundation with fuller coverage only in the areas that need it, coupled with less powder products. Yes, you might need to have a brighter blush and a slightly darker eyeshadow, but you don't need to be a cake face. We want you to look like a blushing bride both in person and on camera, and you're not going to look like that with an inch-thick coating of foundation that conceals your natural beauty.
We do like to add false lashes to all of our bridal clients for that extra pop on the eyes, and use synthetic individual temporary cluster lashes. We use these lashes because they're comfortable on the eyes (many of our clients liken them to having a heavy coating of mascara on), and they're also customisable, so we can adjust the placement and the amount of lashes that we put on to best flatter your eye shape and your chosen make-up look. These lashes are included in our pricing for all bridal and bridal party makeovers, excluding flowergirls and junior bridesmaids.
IF I BOOK WITH EMILY, DOES SHE ACTUALLY DO MY HAIR & MAKE-UP?
By Emily Grace was created by our founder and director, Emily, and she's put together a Glam Squad who works synergistically together to give you and your bridal party a glam look that you'll love. Emily personally does the hair & make-up on all of her brides, and most often works alone on her bridal parties, only bringing her glam squad with her for larger bridal parties. When we work all together, the Glam Squad works on the base of your bridal party, doing the basics, whilst Emily does the finishing touches that gives you that signature By Emily Grace touch.
